Taking a tree down doesn't take the stump with it. A grinder's cutting wheel chews the stump down past soil level, leaving chips and loose soil that can later be leveled and planted, and it's worth asking up front whether a removal quote includes it.

Published stump prices
Angi's September 2026 Orlando guide averages $389 for stump removal, with most jobs between $160 and $620. Grinding alone runs $155 to $510 a project. Clearing several big stumps can approach $1,500 total, but doing them in one visit lowers the cost of each.

Call Sunshine 811 first
Sunshine 811 says to contact it at least two full business days before digging, by calling 811 or (800) 432-4770 or by filing a single-address ticket online. If only one corner of the yard is involved, outline it with white paint or flags so the locators know where to look.
Florida Statutes 556.108 does exempt owners of single-family property, but only for digging up to 10 inches deep, with due care, off any utility easement, and not on land being subdivided. Grinding below grade can go deeper than that, so the ticket is the safer habit.
Chips and roots
- Grindings can stay as mulch or be hauled; ask which the quote includes.
- Inside Ocala, the city's sanitation rules say stumps and tree debris generated by anyone other than the owner have to go to an approved disposal site, not the curb.
- Angi notes that roots tangled with plumbing or hardscaping raise the price.
